Easter is a festival and special holiday that is celebrated by those of Christian faith. It is also known as Resurrection Sunday, that's why the Chinese characters used are 复活 (fù huó) which means to resurrect or come back to life.
Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable festivals, meaning that it does not fall on a fixed date in the calendar. That is why Easter day always fall on different dates every year. Lunar New Year is the same too!
Nowadays non-Christians have taken up the Western custom of Easter egg hunts for the novelty. For children, eating and painting Easter eggs 复活节彩色蛋 [fù huó jié cǎi sè dàn] is the most important and fun custom on Easter Sunday.
In older times, Easter Eggs used dyed chicken eggs, but nowadays they are replaced with decorated chocolate 巧克力 [qiǎo kè lì], or plastic eggs filled with candy such as jellybeans. In some traditions, children put out their empty baskets 篮子 [lán zi] for the Easter bunny 兔子 [tù zǐ] to fill while they sleep. The next day, they will wake to find their baskets filled with candy eggs and other treats.
For others, it is also a time to have a family meal together as some places will offer a special Easter meal or buffet during the holiday.
