Chinese Zodiac 十二生肖

Instead of asking about your horoscope, most Chinese people will ask about one's Chinese zodiac sign. It is a 12-year cycle with each year relating to an animal. There is an interesting Chinese folklore that explains the order of the animals:

In the story, the gods decided to hold a grand race to see which animal could finish first. The winner would be placed first in the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and then followed by the next eleven in order. All the animals in the kingdom were invited, but unfortunately only 12 animals showed up at the event.

The 12 animals that came for the race were a rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. These are what we now know as the Chinese zodiac animals.

Before the finishing line, there was a river to cross. The cunning yet small Rat thought of a brilliant idea. The Rat hopped on the back of the Ox. Just as the Ox was about to climb onto the riverbank to claim victory, the rat leaped off his back and sprinted towards the finish line.

The first year in the Chinese Zodiac calendar is therefore named after the cunning Rat and the second, after the Ox. The Tiger and the Rabbit finished in third and fourth, respectively. Not surprisingly, the slow and lazy pig finished last.
